BREAKING FREE FROM THE COMPARISON TRAP: EMBRACING YOUR UNIQUE JOURNEY

I’ve always joked that comparison is one of my greatest talents.

However, I know deep down that it definitely kills my joy. This is one of the reasons I took a long pause from social media. I found myself comparing my life to the lives of others, which often resulted in feelings of inadequacy in one form or another (I should have had children, I should make more money, I should volunteer more, blah, blah, blah).

Comparing myself—and my life—to others was not only making me feel insufficient, but it was also causing me to feel envious, which lowered my vibration.

I remember my mother commenting that I should be happy for others and their achievements (what I wouldn’t give to hear that advice from her again). Being happy for others was easier said than done, but it was still something I strived for.

Fast forward to today. Do I still compare myself? Of course, I do! I definitely wish I were further along in my business or had a companion to live life with.. However, I am truly grateful for where I am. I’ve become more comfortable with trusting the process and believing that I am exactly where I’m supposed to be.

How to Embrace Your Unique Journey

There are two practices that have been helpful in getting me to this place:

  1. Appreciating all that I am, all that I have, and all that I will be. I am now able to look at someone who may have the life I think I want and genuinely be happy for them, knowing that I am in the process of creating the life I want AND deserve.

  2. Learning to admire other people’s skills and attributes and letting them inspire me, rather than using them as a reason to degrade myself. I got this tip from a Mel Robbins podcast episode, and I thought it was genius! I can’t get enough of her.

So, the next time you find yourself in the comparison trap, try to appreciate who you are and where you’re at. Look for the qualities you admire in that person and use them as inspiration, knowing that you will soon be there!
